GRANDMA BANKS HAS PASSED TO HER REWARD

Came to Umatilla County in 1874 From Southern Oregon

Grandma Banks died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. N.C. Dickinson, Wednesday, shortly after the noon hour. Death came as the result of a paralytic stroke, which came several days ago. The end of a long and useful life came, with five of her children at her side.

Martha J. Sherrod was born in Tennessee, on May 21, 1829, to Arthur Sherrod and Susan (Erving) Sherrod. She grew to womanhood in Arkansas, where, on November 8, 1851, she was united in marriage with H. Banks, who, though in a feeble state of health, survives her.

The year following their marriage they crossed the plains to southern Oregon. in 1874 they came to Umatilla County, settling near Athena, where they have since resided.

Grandma Banks was the mother of twelve children, none of whom are still living. They are, Mrs. N.C. Dickinson, at whose home she died; J. N. Banks, of Riparia, Wash; Samuel A. Banks of Sebastopol, California; Wilson B. Banks, who died in 1902 near Ukiah, California; Alfred R. Banks, of Pendleton; Thomas J. Banks who died near Athena in 1880; H.P.
