HILKIAH BANKS A HIGHLY RESPECTED PIONEER PASSES AWAY

Died Sunday, Just Twenty-Five Days After the Death of His Estimable Wife

Grandpa Banks died Sunday Evening at 7 o'clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. N. C. Dickinson, after an illness extending over a period of two years.

Death claimed the old gentleman just Twenty-Five days from the time his estimable wife was taken from his side. Mr. Banks had been failing gradually since last fall when he was afflicted with a paralytic stroke, and the end has been expected for some time. He had been practically helpless for several months.

Hilkiah Banks was born in the state of Alabama on May 18, 1823, and when a child moved with his parents to Tennessee. When in his 15th year they moved to Arkansas. He was converted at the age of 18 years and joined the Methodist church.

He was married in J ? to Rebecca E. Hubbard. This union was blessed by the birth of ___ children, the eldest, a girl, died when a child. The next, a son, James S. Banks of Athena, and a daughter, Mrs. Emaline Cornutt live in Central Point, Oregon.

His wife died in 1849 and in 1850 he was married to Martha J. Sherrod, who died January 20th, 1904. He was the father of fifteen children.

He crossed the plains in 1852, settled in Oregon, and has made his home in the state ever since, for the last 30 years in Umatilla County.

he was laid to rest in the Athena Cemetery on the 16th of February, 1904., the funeral being held in the new Methodist Church. He was followed to his last resting place by a large concourse of friends and relatives.
