Pearl May (Cakebread) Peck was born to George & Libbie (Lillie) Cakebread. She was survived by her husband William Elsworth Peck; one son Earl Peck; and eight daughters Hilda, Clara, Dora, Rosie, Prudence, Hazel, Thelma, and Ellen Peck.

Pearl was killed on her 35th birthday in a tornado, their house shattered, a splintered 2x4 pierced her, pinning her to the ground. Daughter Ellen, 14 months old, was held by her mother but escaped without a scratch. A 4-year-old daughter, Thelma, held her mother's hand, had a knee injured by the same 2x4. The only thing standing when the storm had passed was the cake sitting on their old wood stove.
