Joseph H. Merritt was the fifth child born to James Merritt and Mary Hendrix Merritt in Ovid, New York.

In 1828 James and Mary's youngest son, Joseph, packed his belongings and moved west to Ohio, taking up residence in Butler County just north of the city of Cincinnati. Ohio had been a state since 1803 and was relatively well settled by the time of Joseph's arrival. In Ohio Joseph learned the harness and saddler's trade, and practiced that trade for several years.

While in Butler County Joseph met, and on June 25, 1832, married Sarah Van Fossen, the daughter of Nathan Van Fossen of Butler County, Ohio. The Van Fossen family had come from Pennsylvania and settled near the town of Pisgah where Nathan Van Fossen had purchased one hundred and fifty acres of land. Joseph and Sarah's first three children were born in Ohio. Mary Jane, probably named after Grandma Mary Merritt, was born on March 23, 1833. Their next child and first son, DeWitt Clinton Merritt, was born on July 5, 1835. He probably was named after the Honorable DeWitt Clinton, former governor of New York and presidential candidate in 1812. Clinton was also a leader in education and a proponent of the Erie Canal. Joseph and Sarah's third child was also a son, born in Ohio on July 17, 1837, whom they named William Henry Morrison Merritt. William Henry may have been born in or near Toledo where his parents resided briefly after leaving Butler County.

Joseph and his older brother John and mother Mary settled in near Olin, Iowa in 1836. After Joseph's first wife, Sarah VanFossen, (Born Butler County, OH 12/27/1813 died 3/22/1844)died, he married Mary A. Thorpe, 03/22/1846 (Born London, England, 1815 died 1/28/1880). Five children were born from this union.

Just before the turn of the century Joseph H. Merritt moved from Jackson county, Iowa, to Sturgis to spend the remainder of his years with daughter, Rebecca Ann Merritt (Born 1/05/1839), son-in-law [who was also his nephew], and grandchildren. Iowa pioneer Joseph H. Merritt died in Sturgis on July 24, 1898, and was buried in the Bear Butte cemetery overlooking the town.

According to Jackson County, Iowa history, Roger Merritt, Joseph Merritt,s grandfather, born some time prior to 1730, was a farmer in Rye New, York, where he leasted 40 acres to the US government to facilite the building of a navel school. That lease is still in the Merritt name.
