Mary Hendrix or Hendrickson Merritt (Maiden name as entered into family history )

What we know thus far about James and Mary Merritt. First, we have good reason to believe that James Merritt was the son of a Roger Merritt of the town of Rye in Westchester County, New York, and that James, as a native of New York, grew up in the eastern part of the state during our War of Independence. Secondly, family records claim that James Merritt married Mary Hendrix or Hendrickson, possibly in 1790, but probably closer to the year 1800. We also know from census data that James was born after 1766 and before 1784, and from tombstone data that Mary was born on or about July 26, 1771. We assume that sometime after their marriage, but certainly before 1806, Mary and James moved from the Atlantic seaboard to the Finger Lakes region of New York state, an area which had just become the new frontier after the end of the War of Independence in 1793.

The children of Mary Merritt include, Jane Merritt, born about 1800; Eleanor Merritt Hicks, born 12/7/1801; William Merritt, born 1804, John Merritt, born 2/23/1806; Joseph H. Merritt, born 12/13/1807; Mary Ann Merritt, born 3/10/1810.
