Mary Merritt’s oldest son, William, born in Ovid, New York, in 1804, had opted to stay on in Seneca county. He had married a lady named Phoebe sometime before 1828, and William and Phoebe had three children born in Seneca county: Joseph, born in 1828; James, born about 1834; and Elizabeth, born about 1837. Did they live in the old Merritt home place? We don’t know.

Then, sometime after the birth of their third child, perhaps in 1838, William and Phoebe left Ovid and moved to Wayne county, Michigan. (12) Wayne county is west of what is now the city of Detroit. We know they arrived in Michigan before 1840 because their fourth child, Jane, was born in Michigan in that year.

William and Phoebe settled in Plymouth township of Wayne county, where William worked as a carpenter. After daughter Jane they had four more children born in Wayne county: Harrison, born about 1842; Martha, born about 1845; Ephraim, born about 1846; and George, born in September, 1851.

William Merritt died sometime before 1870, as his wife Phoebe is listed as a widow in that year’s census.

At least two of their sons married. James Merritt, their second son, lived in Lynn township of Oakland county, Michigan, with his wife Laura, born in Michigan in August, 1839. James and Laura had at least two children: Edna, born October, 1869, and Clyde, born September, 1877.

Another son, George, became a farmer, first in Plymouth township and later Narchville township in Wayne county. George married a gal named Ella, last name unknown, who had been born in Michigan in September, 1856. George and Ella had at least three children, all born in Michigan: Zenaide, born May, 1884; Hilda, born July, 1888; and Carrie, born May, 1893.
