The photo's and news clips are from my private collection. Either I, or my dad, have all originals.

John was married for many years, since 1940, to my precious great Aunt Wanda V. Gambel.

Johnny left his wife for a Greman born waitress. In 1990 he married the other woman and sold his million dollar business he and Wanda owned.

I am sorry if this offends anyone but facts are facts.

No mention of Wanda in any obits for Johnny, but she was with him almost 50 years before the waitress came into the picture.

John Winston Bradford, 89, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2008, at his Town of Wescott home.

He was born on Jan. 5, 1919, in Crowell, Texas, a son of the late Bennie H. and Esther (Miller) Bradford. He graduated from Thalia Texas High School and then attended Hardin Simmons University on a basketball scholarship. John moved to Appleton in 1939 and began working for Kurz & Root Electric Company in 1942.

In September 1959 he bought Kurz Electric Company with Allen Johnson. They sold the business in 1990. On March 9, 1990, he was united in marriage to the former Ingrid Kirchner at Abilene, Texas.

John's hobbies were fishing and metal detecting. John always said, "No one should be in a boat unless you have a fishing pole in your hand."

Survivors include his wife, Ingrid Bradford of the Town of Wescott in Shawano County; sister, Evelyn Balis of Knox City, Tenn.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth Bradford, Knox City, Tenn.; sisters, Nola Claxton, Abilene, Texas, Atheleen Owens, Knox City, Tenn., Bennie Holten, San Angelo, Texas; and his fishing buddy, Carl Hoffman, Bonduel.

John served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill during World War II and received the following citation from the United States Navy for his military service:

U.S.S. BUNKER HILL (CV-17)

The Commanding Officer of the UNITED STATES SHIP Bunker HILL takes pleasure in commending

JOHN Winston Bradford, FIREMAN FIRST CLASS

UNITED STATES NAVAL RESERVE

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

"For excellent service in the line of his profession in connection with operations against the enemy while a member of the crew on board a United States aircraft carrier on 11 May 1945 in the Western Pacific. When his ship was severely damaged by sudden and determined enemy air attacks, he as a member of the electrical division, in spite of heavy smoke, fires, and toxic gases, performed his duties with cool judgment, energy, and courage. Following the control and reduction of the fires, his work in restoring vital electrical circuits and services were of a very high order. In spite of constant danger from damaged electrical wiring, he worked unflinchingly to restore normal conditions. His high performance of duty contributed materially to saving the ship from additional damage, her crew from greater loss of life, and to restoring the ship rapidly to a seaworthy and fighting condition. His conduct and example were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. A copy of this citation will be made a part of his official record."

G. A. SEITZ,

Captain, U.S. Navy.

At his request, there will be no other services. He will be laid to rest in Grand Marais, Minn. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund for the Shawano Community Hospice, 309 N. Bartlette St., Shawano WI 54166, has been established in his memory. A celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday, March 29, at 2 p.m. at their residence. Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano is assisting the family.
