Virgil was the 4th of 7 children born to Martin 'Mart' and Matilda 'Tillie' (Berberich) Peter. He survived Polio as a young boy and graduated from Belmont High School. Virgil never married and lived with his parents on their farm outside of Mt. Carmel, IL. Like his father, he was a life-long farmer. Once his parents passed, Virgil continued to live in the farm house and work the Peter Farm. He was a member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
