Matthew Dixon is said to have been born about 50 miles from the coast of the Carolinas between 1776 and 1783. Census records reveal more closely the date of 1783. He married Polly Hill on September 18, 1804, near Castillian Springs in Sumner Co., TN. He was the son of William and Mary A. Brinson Dixon, and William is believed to be the son of Walter or possibly William Dickson Sr., whose line is from England. William's daughters, Anne (wife of Martin Perry), Keziah (wife of Benjamin Smith), and Eunice "Uniss" (wife of John Warner, Jr. ), are named in their father's Will, which was dated 1818, Matthew is not mentioned in the will, as he was possibly living in middle TN, before traveling on to Arkansas.

Matthew is named in Bedford Co., TN, court records as executor of his son-in-law's estate, that being his daughter Alice's husband, Peyton Cooper. Another document of his father, William Dixon's transactions is dated 1834, but does not contain reference to Matthew, rather William's youngest son John is named. More documentation exists, once he arrived in Izard Co., AR.
Matthew is believed to have brothers, Josiah, Jedediah and John, and sisters Anne, Keziah, and Eunice, named above. His sister, Eunice had married John Warner, Jr., the second Sherriff of Bedford Co., TN., and had daughters. First, Huldah Warner, who married a Wilhoite. A grand daughter married Sells Weaver, AR, and another granddaughter, Hattie, married a Herbert in AR., these were daughters of her son John Muse Warner. Second, daughter Anna Adaline married a Wilhoite, and secondly, a Robinson. See Eunice Warner, Bedford Co., TN., for a history of her family, whose great granddaughter Adeline Wilhoite, married Henry Hollis Horton, a former governor of TN.

Matthew was in Sumner Co., in 1804, and was also in Bedford Co., TN, around 1810. By the late 1840's, he and his nephew Jim Cooper, left on horseback from near Lookout Mountain, Hamilton Co., TN. And they traveled west, and entered Izard Co., AR. They settled and built log cabins near the head waters of Mill Creek, which later became Melbourne. With the families coming later by wagon train. He first received a land grant on March 1, 1856 in Izard Co., AR. Twsp. 16N, Range 9W, Sec. 25, 5th Principal Meridian, consisting of 40 acres he called Rocky Bayou, situated off of Hwy. 9 south of Melbourne, on Lunenburg Rd., which about two acres of it became Lunenburg Cemetery. His wife Polly died not long after, but "Granddaddy" Matthew lived to be about 90. according to the Owen Dixon 1940 family record and genealogy. Matthew died in his daughter Caroline Cooper's home in nearby Lunenburg proper.

According to the unpublished Dixon genealogy, "Descendants of Matthew Dixon, 1776--1940", written by Owen and Ruth Dixon, Matthew and Polly are buried side by side on their 40 acre home place he called Rocky Bayou, which was first probably considered to be a family plot in the 1850's. Part of which is now the Lunenburg Cemetery, directly on the west side of Lunenburg road. On p. 6. of the book, Coopers Of Izard County, compiled by Mary Cooper Miller, and taken from Owen H. Dixon's original 1940 work, they are believed to be buried there.
Matthew was the father of ; Thomas, who went to Tippah Co., MS., and then on to Titus Co., TX. sons Hilliard, Harry P., John B. "Brushy", daughters Kiziah Caroline (Cooper), and Alice (Cooper), all stayed in Izard Co. Matthew is my 4th Great Grandfather. Matthew's sister Eunice, and his brother John, both each named a daughter with the middle name BRINSON. Also, his brother Jedediah, married Nancy Brinson, a family name. His brother Josiah, named a son Matthew, who married a Palestine, and is buried in Talley Cem., Marshall Co., TN.

The completed Matthew Dixon Genealogy was compiled in 1940, by Owen H. and Ruth Quinn-Dixon. Owen had many helpful contributors in his 17 month endeavor, most notably were Frances Dixon-Thompson, and Ivy Viola Dixon-Turner. Owen was a Census taker in Izard Co., which probably helped a lot in contacting relatives after having been gone from there so many years. Many families have benefitted from this historical document, in adding to it, as he had hoped following generations would do, thereby completing their own family lines. Although there are several errors in dates and spelling of names, it is a great work. He made several copies and sent them to relatives. We were fortunate enough to have two original copies, which are priceless. Owen lived his latter years in Grant's Pass, OR, and in Raymond, WA. There are literally many hundreds if not thousands, of descendants of Matthew Dixon our Patriarch. May "Grand Daddy" Matthew rest in peace beside his wife Polly, in Rocky Bayou Lunenburg, in the hills of his beloved Arkansas. This work has been picked up and plastered all over the internet with various modifications. My research included, but was not limited by the work of Owen Dixon. Many visits to court houses and cemeteries in Izard Co. AR., and Bedford Co. TN., contributed to this bio. It is an ongoing labor of love. I have met several Dixon cousins on this journey. May each reader be blessed by our great Dixon heritage. Rest in peace Grand daddy Matthew, our Patriarch.
