Vivion was the eldest of 7 children of Sinéad (Ni Fhlannagáin) & Éamon de Valera. He is the namesake of his grandfather, Vivion Juan de Valera.

His earlier education was by the Holy Ghost Fathers at Blackrock College in Dublin. He embarked on an exemplary academic career at University College Dublin, earning his Bachelor of Science in 1932 and his Master of Science in 1934. Pursuing legal studies, he was admitted to King's Inns in 1937, entitled to practice as a Barrister-at-Law. In 1956 he earned his Doctorate of Science in physical chemistry from UCD.

At the outset of WW II, known in Ireland as the Emergency, he entered the Irish Army, as did his brothers Rory & Terry. Beginning as a Major in 1939, by the end of the war he had risen to Lieutenant-Colonel.

It was during his Army career, in June of 1942, that he married Bride Hearne, (pronounced BREE-ja). They had 2 children together; Ann in 1946 & Éamon in 1950, who was named after his grandfather, the famed Irish Revolutionary Éamon de Valera.

Bride de Valera died at just 40 years of age in 1951.

Before even leaving service at the end of WW II, Vivion de Valera began a stunning career that encompassed politics, law, business and the sciences. In 1944 he won his first Oireachtas election, as Teachta Dála for Fianna Fáil. He won 10 consecutive elections, serving as a member of Dáil Éireann from 1944 - 1981.

Beginning in 1951 and continuing until his passing in 1982, he was Managing Editor of the Irish Press, the esteemed Republican Nationalist daily newspaper. His tenure at it's helm was marked by efficiency, an astute business sense, as well as courteousness and graciousness.

He was a life long Member, Royal Irish Academy the election to which is exclusive and recognizes academic excellence in the sciences and humanities. In addition to MRIA, he was a Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry in Ireland. He also practiced law for many years. In 1975, he married a 2nd time, to Vera Rock.
