COL. J. O. MERRIWETHER DEAD
Col. J. O. Merriwether, Sr., died at his home here Thursday, July 8th. Col. Merriwether was one of the oldest citizens of the county, having moved here from Oglethorpe County, Ga., in 1851. He was 84 years of age, and served throughout the civil war under the command of Gen. Forrest. Col. Merriwether's wife died about five years ago. Col. Merriwether was a member of the Baptist church and is survived by his sons, J. O. Merriwether, Jr., of Senatobia, T. O. Merriwether of Memphis; daughters, Mrs. J. T. Gabbert of Senatobia, Mrs. N. R. Sledge, Sr., of Como. He leaves 22 grand-children and 21 great grand-children. The remains were interred at Bethesda cemetery at 10 o'clock July 9.
