{15 Jan 2017: Biography of Bishop by Grant H. Collar Jr, b.1931. My father, Grant Sr (1901-1978) was a first cousin of Minnie Jane PIERSOL Arbogast (1883-1954), who married Asa S. "Ace" ARBOGAST (1879-1972). In 1992, this writer visited Mountain View Cemetery, Walla Walla, Washington and photographed tombstones of his Piersol and Arbogast relatives. In the IOOF section, he found four Arbogast stones. Three of these were eventually identified as close kin of Asa: George Bruce Arbogast (1839-1915); his son, Richard Lincoln Arbogast (1862-1927); and Richard's wife, Amanda B. Arbogast (1862-1953). But Bishop's place in the family was not identified.

So, beginning Oct 2016, this writer researched Bishop and found his origins back to earlier Arbogast ancestors he had already recorded in the book, Kahler/Collar Family and In-Laws, 1994 (from the work of many people and agencies: family histories; censuses; obituaries; birth, marriage, and death records; US Military Enlistment, Service, and Pension Records; US Social Security Death Index; and Find A Grave Memorials). Most of these records were accessed from Latter Day Saints (Mormon) FamilySearch documents on the internet.

Especially valuable sources were the Arbogast family history researched and recorded by Daniel SMITH (b: c1845, known in the family as "Uncle Dan" as he married Miranda J. FAIRCHILD, a sister of Fannie W. FAIRCHILD Arbogast); Kate O. HENDERSON Arbogast (1847-1924); Fannie W. FAIRCHILD Arbogast (1853-1916), married Henry Harmon ARBOGAST (1845-1919); Vera Alice HUGHES Hamon (1911-1996), granddaughter of Fannie; Sgt Irene Ruth "Peggy" HUGHES Clough (1921-2013), granddaughter of Fannie; Nettie Lavere SIMONS Arbogast (1918-2002), who married Floyd Sylvester ARBOGAST (1912-1982); George W. McBRAYER (1923-1984) and his wife Hallie Lucile ARBOGAST McBrayer (b.1925), the last child of Asa S. ARBOGAST Sr and Minnie Jane PIERSOL and younger sister of Floyd). Hallie furnished all their work to me, although I phoned and corresponded with Vera (and interviewed her in person), Nettie, Peggy, and Hallie during 1992-1993.

Handy Book for US Genealogists, 8th Ed, 1991:
History of changes in Virginia counties pertinent to this family of Michael ARBOGAST (1734-1812), German immigrant, arrived 1749 in Virginia.

Virginia became the 10th US state in 1788, and part of its western portion became West Virginia in 1863 during the Civil War, because they objected to being part of the Confederacy. The currently western Virginia counties of Augusta (created 1738) and Highland (created 1847) and the currently eastern counties of West Virginia of Pendleton (created 1787) and Pocahontas (created 1821) were the initial US homes of this family - in or near towns named Crabbottom (now Blue Grass), Circleville, Bartow, etc - until some joined the Westward Movement about 1810 and moved largely to Ohio, then some to Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, Kansas, Oregon, Washington, and California.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summarized research of the writer as cited in the first three paragraphs above:
Arbogast ancestral line of Bishop Arbogast:
1. Michael ARBOGAST, b: 27 Mar 1694 Kehl, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, d: 03 May 1743 Kehl, burial unknown (Find A Grave# 135247473), married Catherina KONIGIN, b:_13_Nov 1695, d: after 1736, had at least one son:
2. Michael ARBOGAST, b: 1734 Baden-Württemberg, Germany, arrived 25 Sep 1749 on the ship Speedwell in the English Colony of Virginia, married 1758/59 to Mary Elizabeth SAMUELS, b.1736 in what is now Pendleton County, West Virginia (Find A Grave# 45733889). They had 8 sons and 2 daughters. One of those sons fathered Solomon, who fathered Bishop, the subject of this biography. This family (beginning with this Michael, b: 1734, was Chapter 12 of 19 pages and 445 kin) was published 1994 by this writer as Kahler/Collar Family and In-Laws (no longer in print, but manuscript has been continuously revised).
3. This writer failed to identify the father of Solomon, but was highly confident he narrowed the field to three of Michael's sons who had sons during 1804/05, when Solomon was born. Hopefully, some other researcher with access to more data sources will fill this gap.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My candidates for father of Solomon were:

(1). David ARBOGAST, b: c1760/65 Augusta County, Virginia, d: 1833 Madison County, Indiana, burial unknown, married 4 Jul 1785 to Elizabeth FLEISHER, b: 1765 Augusta County, Virginia, d: 15 Jan 1820 Madison County, Indiana, burial unknown (Find A Grave# 45761541), had four daughters and five sons. The only son known to this writer was Henry Miles ARBOGAST, b: 29 Aug 1790 Pocahontas County, Virginia, d: 06 Dec 1871 Illinois, married 1812 to Mary HUFFMAN, b: 24 Mar 1787 Virginia, d: 12 Apr 1853 Illinois, both buried McCord Cemetery, Farmer City, DeWitt County, Illinois. Thus the other four unknown sons could be Solomon, b.1804/05?

(2). John C. ARBOGAST, b: 1762 Frederick or Augusta County, Virginia, d: 12 Apr 1821 Circleville, Pendleton County, western Virginia, burial unknown, married 1786 Pendleton County, western Virginia to Hannah DAVIS, b: 1770 Augusta County, Virginia, d: 1830 (or 1838?) Pendleton County, western Virginia, burial unknown, had seven children born 1789-1804 (all_accessible from Find A Grave# 45733665 for_John_C.). Thus, Solomon, b.1804/05 could have been an 8th child?

(3). Michael ARBOGAST Jr, b: 1764/68 Augusta County, Virginia, d: May 1813 Champaign County, Ohio, (alleged via genealogy.com to be) buried Crabbottom Pauper Farm, Highland County, Virginia, married 1792 to Barbara BUZZARD, had seven children (only two known from Find A Grave# 122605900 for Michael). Thus Solomon, b.1804/05 could have been one of the five unnamed children?

Note that there are also minor location connections between Michael Jr and his brother, David b: c1760/65, and Solomon. The latter married 1834 Champaign County, Ohio to Mary Barrington. Per Find a Grave# 122605900, Michael Jr died 1813 in Champaign County. And a granddaughter of David ARBOGAST, b: c1760/65 (Luarkey Jane MOSS Davis) was born 1830 Champaign County (to David's daughter, Anna Abigail "Ann" ARBOGAST Moss).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4. Solomon Arbogast, b.1804/05 Virginia (per 1850 Census of Roundhead, Hardin County, Ohio for Solaman (sic) Arbogast), d: between 1860 and 1870 Censuses of Hardin County, married 30 Oct 1834 Champaign County, Ohio to Mary BARRINGTON, b.1809 (per her Probate Court Death record), d: 25 Nov 1878 Roundhead, Hardin County of tuberculosis. Their burials were unknown to this writer, but some of their children of the 1850-1880 censuses were buried Roundhead Cemetery, Roundhead (15 Arbogast burials in Find A Grave in Oct 2016). Therefore, the parents were probably buried there also.
5. Bishop Arbogast, b.1855 (per tombstone and b.1855/56 per 1860 and 1870 Censuses), d:_02_May_1917 Walla Walla, Walla Walla County, Washington; age 61 years, 6 months, 27 days; parents: Solomon Arbogast and Mary Barrington (per Bishop's Death Certificate).
1880 Census, Roundhead Twp, Hardin County, Ohio for Bishop:
Bishop was 24, b: Ohio, single, farmer, living in household of Richard Castle, age 28, b: Ohio. [Bishop's mother had died two years before and his father had died 10-20 years before].
04 Jun 1885 Census of Sargent Twp, Custer County, State of Nebraska for Bishop:
Bishop was 29, b: Ohio, single, farming, parents b:Virginia.
15 Apr 1910 Census of Walla Walla Ward 3, Walla Walla County, Washington for Bishop:
Bishop was 54, b: Ohio, widowed, occupation: none (same as all residents). He was one of 33 men whose "Relationship to Head of Household" was "inmate" (or, more accurately: resident) of the Odd Fellows Home on Boyer Avenue, which had a staff of seven: superintendent and his wife, cook, two maids, nurse, and janitor. [The Independent Order of Odd Fellows is an organization of both men and women in_26_countries dedicated to "Visit the sick, relieve the distress, bury the dead, and educate the orphans."]
Bishop probably continued living in the Odd Fellows Home until his death seven years later. The writer found no indication of the name of the wife who widowed him, nor any children they may have had. It is possible the 1900 Census would reveal a wife and any children.
Find A Grave Memorial# 57390524 for Bishop before 28 Oct 2016 transfer to Grant Collar:
"Bishop Arbogast, b: 1855, d: May 2, 1917, buried Mountain View Cemetery, Walla Walla, Walla Walla County, Washington, Plot: WALLA-OF-25-14-35. Created by: Tracy Turner, Record added: Aug 20, 2010, Find A Grave Memorial# 57390524", with a tombstone photo "Added by: Anonymous".
