Emma was the daughter of James and Melinda (Lewis) Burgess. She was born in Watervliet, MI, sister of Elizabeth and Rachel. She married William Van Wormer 25 Jun 1871 in Kendall County, IL, they had three children: Mary (May), Theo and George.

Mrs. Emma Van Wormer, aged 74. a resident of Watervliet for about 80 years, died at her home on the Lewis Addition last Thursday, following an Illness of many months of cancer of the throat. Mrs. Van Wormer was the widow of William H. Van Wormer, who died many years ago. She was one of the highly esteemed women of the community and was for years active In church and society work. She was a member of the local M. E. church and of the Ladies' Aid and also of the Women's Relief Corps until the local chapter disbanded some years ago.
Mrs. Van Wormer Is survived by one son. George Van Wormer of Hamilton. Ohio, and two sisters. Mrs. Rachel Comstock of Watervliet and Mrs. Jas. Bushnell of Aurora. Illinois. Funeral services were conducted Burial was beside her late husband on the Van Wormer lot In the Watervliet cemetery. Watervliet Record Sept. 16, 1927
