HARRIET BEAL DIED AT RAPATEE
Reached a Ripe Old Age and Was Beloved By a Large Circle

Rapatee, Dec. 14 – Harriet DOUGLAS was born in Hastings, New York, Sept. 14, 1820, and died in the village of Rapatee, Dec. 10, 1909, aged 89 years, 3 months and 26 days. She was first married to John RUSSELL, Sept. 18, 1838. To this union was born four children: Lucy A., who married the late Charles NEWCOMB. She resides at Middle Grove and is blind from the effect of a kick from a horse. John J. RUSSELL of Kansas City. Harriet BLAKESLEE, now deceased and Jennie, wife of W.W. McSCIMMONS of Cromwell, Iowa. Mr. RUSSELL died in 1848. She was married again to Aaron BEAL, and to this union was born five children: Ida A. wife of G. W. PRATT of Peoria, Alice, wife of J.C. HOXWORTH of Rapatee; Mrs. Clara PALMER, deceased; Lewis BEAL of Peoria, and Oscar, who died in childhood. All of the living children with their husbands and wives were present at the funeral. Mr. BEAL died in 1895, since which time she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Alice HOXWORTH, where everything was done for the mother’s comfort that it was possible to do.
Children, grandchildren and great grandchildren shared her love, sympathy and confidence in her declining years and during her 71 years of married life.
The funeral was held in Rapatee church at 10:30 Sunday morning. Funeral directors Elmiran Morse of Farmington in charge. Rev. Mrs. Elsie Anderson, Free Will Baptist minister of Macomb, preached the sermon and it was very sympathetic. The singing was done by Misses Edna Way, Mame Foster, Rilla and Edith Morse, who sang “It is Well With My Soul,” “Asleep in Jesus”, and “Rock of Ages” in a splendid manner.
The honorary pallbearers were Harmon HALL, W.F. HARDON, Millard BRYAN, G.A. TAYLOR, W.H. SWIGERT and William ADAMS. The acting pall bearers were Frank WOOD, Charles NEWCOMB, Wade PRATT, George PALMER, John RUSSELL of Iowa and John RUSSELL of Kansas City, all grandsons of the deceased. The interment was in the Uniontown cemetery, beside her late husband, Aaron BEAL.
For a quarter of a century the writer has known of this woman’s life. Truly, it was of a very high character. We all loved her. And she kept up her reading until within a few months of her death, and was well versed in the news of the day. Think of 89 years of usefulness in one life. Three generations of the family were sincere mourners at the funeral.
