"On the day of the raid Grandmother had given birth to a baby girl. She [Grandmother Martha Jane Inglish Lefors] also had the measles. Grandfather was in the yard when a band of bushwhackers shot off a lock of his long curly hair. The men then cut the cord bed from under Grandmother and the baby. They turned the lard cans upside down looking for money and valuables etc.....

Soon after the raid my grandparents went to Missouri and stayed there until after the end of the war..."

This story would have taken place on Oct 2, 1861, it is not known if the baby died that day or soon after.
