John grew up on the family farm which had orchards and some livestock. His family was rebuilding the farm after it was ravaged by the Civil War. After his father died in 1874, he and his mother continued to live on the family farm. They were found there on the 1880 Census. By that time most of the other siblings and their families had moved to Wise and Parker County, Texas.
On 20 Feb 1885 John and Nicy Hunt, sister of his brother-in-law, Alfred, married in Benton County, Arkansas. They became the parents of Wesley in 1886. His elder brother Samuel Bender came back to Arkansas to take care of their father's business and take his mother to Texas with him. At that time John and Nicy moved to Texas. They soon divorced and John married Amy Fidillia "Dillie" Reynolds in 1891. John and Amy had five sons, Frank, John Homer, Sherman Campbell, Conrad C and Glen Burton.
John and Amy were still in Texas in 1889, but moved to Tekoa, Washington, where John's eldest brother, Campbell, had gone. John worked in the lumber industry and in real estate in the Tekoa and Palouse, Washington area. He was found in Rockford, Spokane County, Washington on the 1900 and 1910 Census Rolls. John died on 11 Sept 1919 in Palouse, Washington at the age of 54 and was buried in Tekoa, Whitman County in the Goldenrod Cemetery.
