Rebecca Bachtel Haynes was my 4th great grandmother. The following is from her obituary:

Died, Rebecca Haynes, wife of Mr. Samuel Haynes, at the residence of her daughter Mrs. Eugene Bashaw, near Hickory Grove, Carroll Co., Illinois, Sunday, August 13th, 1882, aged 67 years 11 months and 19 days, of dropsy.

The subject of this obituary was born in Frederick County, Maryland, her maiden name was Rebecca Bachtel; was married to Mr. Samuel Haynes in the year 1832, was the mother of fifteen children. She with her husband and family came west on December 2, 1855, and located in this county, and since that time they have resided near this city.

Mother Haynes gave her heart to God when but fifteen years of age; was a member of the M.E. church of this city. Mrs. Haynes's life has been one of unexampled Christian character, strongly marked by great humility, self-forgetfulness and a high sense of duty. She filled nobly and well the position in which she was placed; as wife, mother and friend, she was loving and devoted; her special sphere was caring for homeless children, besides her own large family, she adopted three children when they were very young, a boy and two girls, and cared for them as she would that others would do to her children if they were left in similar circumstances, and their devotion to her surely was proof that they had received their share of love and care, and often has she expressed a wish for life that she would take more of those helpless and uncared for children and bring them up for usefulness; she was faithful and efficient, doing her full duty, carrying sunshine always with her, so that the fragrance of her memory lingers in many homes, especially the sorrowing and careworn. She was a great sufferer for months, the immediate cause of her death was dropsy. A few days before her death she was unable to speak, but her hands were clasped together in holy ecstasy, and her face became strangely luminous with joy as she fell asleep in Jesus. The funeral services were held in the Hickory Grove church, Rev. J. H. Grim officiating and preached from Phillippians 1st chapter and 31/21st verse. Her remains were followed by a large concourse of friends to Oakwood Cemetery, this city, on Tuesday, August 15th and there all that was mortal of mother Haynes was laid away to rest until the second coming of Him who is the resurrection and the life. Mrs. Haynes has left a beautiful example to her sorrowing husband and children. Six sons, three daughters, three adopted children and aged partner survive her to bless her memory.
