Former Miller County Sheriff, Herman V. Abbett, 81, of Tuscumbia died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 1989 at Charles E. Still Hospital in Jefferson City. He was county sheriff for eight years. He was born April 25, 1907 in Tuscumbia to Eli and Susie Forester Abbett. On Dec. 31, 1929 he was married in Tuscumbia to Alice Nixdorf, who survives at the home.

Mr. Abbett was a lifetime resident of the Tuscumbia area. He worked 14 years for the Missouri Department of Corrections, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Tuscumbia Christian Church and the Missouri State Retirees Association.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, James David Abbett of Cameron; three sisters, Ruby Martin of Tuscumbia, Ella Sooter of Ulman and Cleo Malmberg of St. Louis; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services willb e held at 1 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home in Eldon with Bro. Gene Edwards officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Tuscumbia. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests any memorial contributation be made to the American Lung Association.
