In Memory of Mrs. Elmina Dorman.

The subject of this sketch was born in South Carolina, May the 12, 1814, and died at her home five miles north of La Fayette, March 9th, 1907, in her 93 year. She was married to Wiley Dorman, Dec. 19th, 1832. To them were born 11 children and all lived to be grown except one that died in infancy. She had four step-children, who loved her as they would have their own mother. She moved to Alabama, in 1834s where she lived till her death. She joined the Methodist church when she was 18, and lived an exemplary life. She was a kind neighbor, good to the poor, the sick and afflicted, so thoughtful of the comfort and pleasure of others, a most devoted mother. About 12 years ago she fell and dislocated her hip and suffered intense pain, but bore her afflictions with great christian fortitude always trusting in her Savior. She frequently expressed a willingness to go whenever it was His will to take her. The day she was taken sick, she sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and told her loved ones that she was going to die, and for them not to grieve for her. She leaves three sons and three daughters, and a large number of friends and relatives to mourn her death, which was peaceful."


Elmina Jones married Wiley D. Dorman 9 DEC 1832 in Troup County, GA. She was 18 years of age.
With this marriage she inherited four step-children:

Green Washington Dorman
James Monroe Dorman
Sarah Ann Dorman
Susan Dorman

While I cannot speak for the others, my Great Great Grandfather Green Washington Dorman, considered her his mother. I have a letter in my possession written by him 18 November 1900, in which he addresses her as Dear Mother.
She was married to Wiley D. Dorman, two month's shy of 40 years. And while she lived a good many years after his death, she never remarried.
