Mary Ellen Nichols was born in Ursa, Illinois, Aug 25, 1839, and departed this life Dec 7, 1929, at the ripe old age of 90 years, 3 months, and 12 days. In her early life, she became a Christian in Ursa, Illinois and upon moving to Missouri in 1868 she united with the Methodist Church. Her membersthip still is at Mendon, Mo.
She was united in marriage on Dec 24, 1866, to Edward Haney. Seven children were born of this union, four girls and three boys. All are living except one boy, Samuel who died in infancy. The girls are Mrs Dan Wilson, in whose home she had lived since the departure of her husband thirteen years ago, Mrs John Tiejens, Mrs Getrude Bennet, and Mrs Margaret DeWeese, all of Mendon, and sons are George Haney of Marceline, and Charles Haney of Hutchinson, Kansas.
Besides her children, Mrs Haney leaves to mourn her departure twenty-six grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and four great-great=grandchildren.
Few persons are privileged to reach such a ripe old age, and to see their great-great-grandchildren. Surely God is pleased to bless her and reward her for her full years of service as a devoted wife, a loving mother and a kind and helpful neighbor. She was loved by all who knew her, and was very patient and kind. The remains were taken to Huntsville, and on Dec 9 a short funeral service was conducted at the Methodist Church there by her pastor, Bro Iceberge, after which the body was brought to Mendon Cemetery and laid to rest beside her husband.
