Pvt. Howard Rickman was a member of Hq Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. He joined the battalion at Camp Polk, Louisiana, to replace a National Guardsman released from federal service.
He lived through the Japanese attack on Clark Airfield in the Philippine Islands and took part in the Bataan Death March. He was held as a Prisoner of War at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan.
While being transported to Japan on the Arisan Maru, the ship was hit by two torpedoes from an American submarine. As the ship sunk, the Japanese refused to rescue the POWs. Only nine of the 1803 POWs on the ship survived the sinking. Eight of these men survived the war.
