Postville Review, Fri., 29 Dec. 1916.

John H. Laughlin was born in Saratoga county, New York, Aug. 23, 1836, and died at his home in Postville, Iowa, Dec. 22, 1916, aged 80 years and four months.

When a young boy he came with his parents to Indiana, which was then new country, where they experienced the hardships of early pioneer life. In 1849, in company with two other families, the Laughlins moved to northeast Iowa, making the journey with ox teams, being six weeks on the way. After looking about for a desirable location they came to Post township, where they bought a squatter's claim, which is now owned by James R. Laughlin. The following years were busy ones, spent in doing pioneer work, clearing the land, getting out building timbers for the house, which replaced the log cabin, and fencing the farm. Surrounded by the many comforts of the present day as we are we cannot appreciate the many hardships and deprivations that the early settlers of our prosperous country endured so bravely.

On March 14, 1860, John H. Laughlin and Mary Douglass were united in marriage. Mrs. Laughlin passed to her reward on May 2, 1883. On April 1, 1886, Mr. Laughlin and Elizabeth Murray were married. She died Aug. 16, 1913.

Mr. Laughlin early joined the church and lived a consistent, consecrated christian life, beloved by a host of friends. He was a good husband, a kind father, a true neighbor and a loyal American. He lived according to the Golden Rule and died respected and loved by many neighbors.

He is survived by three daughters and one son - Mrs. W. W. Darling of Boise, Idaho; Mrs. W. W. Brooks of Corning, Iowa; Miss _bbie Laughlin of Postville and Harold Laughlin of near Decorah. There are five living grandchildren. Four sisters and one brother preceded Mr. Laughlin, and one brother, James R. Laughlin, survives him.

Funeral services were conducted in the Congregational church at two p.m. Sunday, Dec. 24, 1916, Rev. J. F. Childress officiating. The body was interred in Minert cemetery, there to await the Master's final call to arise and put on immortality.
