Location: crashed near Ploestiori village north of Concordia-Vega refineries Crew of 10 6KIA, 4POW.

Lt.Long lost his life in the Ploesti raid "Operation Tidal Wave" one of the most daring raids of WW2 August 1st 1943. Coming in at tree top level the Travelin' Circus destroy Romanian oil refineries. Lt.Long was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for his valor and heroism.

Lt. Long and crew were in the right wing position of the second element of C force briefed to attack White III. In approach to target of opportunity White IV he saw some B-24s of another group crossing in the distance, this caused concerns of a collision. After the bombs were dropped, B24 JERSEY BOUNCE was it by ground fire in the nose and wings which mortally wounded Lt.David Lipten the navigator and the bombardier. The ship was also attacked by APR (Rumanian) fighter that completely took out the tail turret and killed tail gunner Leycester. Nos 1 and 4 engines and the bomb bay were set on fire. JERSEY BOUNCE Crash landed striking a dirt berm, causing the nose section containing Norm Adams to split off ad roll away from the plane. The pilots escaped the plane by going out the open nose section. Other waist gunner, T/Sgt J.Crumley was killed just before the plane hit. Lt.D.Lipton was hit in the chest while they were still in the air, and tried to get up on the flight deck when the plane crashed. The pilots and crew were badly burned and they were taken to the hospital for treatment, later to become POWs
