Jim enlisted with the United States Army Air Corps on 28 January 1941 and arrived in England on 27 May 1943. Jim was assigned to the 330th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group (Heavy), 201st Bomb Wing, 9th Air Force as a Waist Gunner.

He was based on United States Army Air Force Station 104/Royal Air Force Station Hardwick, located near Bungay, Norfolk, England. His aircraft a B-24D Liberator #42-40609, named Jersey Bounce was hit during Operation Tidal Wave. His bomb group had relocated to Benghazi, Libya for this mission. The operation was to destroy the Concordia Vega Oil Refinery and others located in Ploesti, Romania. Said to be the most heaviest guarded and protected German resource in the region. After hitting their target their aircraft was hit and broke up before crashing. Jim is interred at the Ardennes American Cemetery, Plot C, Row 12, Grave 22 in Neupre, Belgium.

Jim was 25 years old and the son of William George (W.G.) Crumley and Jewell Letitia Miller, she died in 1919. His father remarried Winnie Lipps.
