First Lieutenant Stuart Bernard Mendelsohn, born in 1920, was the son of Louis and Anna (Cohen) Mendelson of Cleveland, Ohio. His mother was born in Grajewo in far NE Poland.
In the 1920 census 1 month old Stuart is living with his parents in Cleveland Ward 4. His father is an insurance agent.
In the 1930 census 10-year-old Stuart is living with his parents and brother Harvey 2, at 1231 Tuscora Ave in Cleveland. His father is a salesman for a coat company.
In the 1940 census 20-year-old Stuart is living with his parents and brother Harvey 10, at 11629 Durant Ave in Cleveland. His father is still a salesman. Stuart is a student at Miami of Ohio.
On his 1941 draft registration 21-year-old Stuart is a student at Miami University at Oxford, Ohio 35 mi NNW of Cincinnati.
Stuart enlisted in the Army Air Corps 4 Apr 1942 at Lockbourne Army Air Base in Columbus, OH. He'd had four years of college and was single without dependents. His civil occupation was listed under actors and actresses. He was 5'9" and weighed 145 lbs. After pilot training he was assigned to the 324th Bomb Squadron of the 91st Bomb Group flying B-17s out of RAF Bassingbourn 44 miles due north of London.
In Oct 1943 Stuart was co-pilot of B-17 42-29741. After his pilot Lt Harold R Christensen was fatally incapacitated returning battle damaged from Schweinfurt in B-17 42-29741, Mendelsohn brought the ship and crew back to crash land at RAF Tangmere 59 mi SW of London.
On 31 Dec 1943 Stuart was pilot of B-17 42-29895 "The Black Swan".
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Ohio show Mendelsohn, Stuart B, 2 Lt from Cuyahoga County as killed in action 31 Dec 1943. Flak KO'd engine #3, then hit by ground fire as they were limping home, crossing low over the Brest peninsula. Crashed Kerancreach, 8 km SW of Bannalec, 40 miles NW of Lorient, France.
