Captain Preston was the Aircraft Commander
pilot of U.S. Army Air Corps B-29-30-MO
Superfortress #42-65347.

He was killed when the bomber developed
engine troubles and crashed into the
Pacific Ocean, two miles beyond the end of
the runway at Tinian Island, while departing
for a mission to Japan.

With the 6th Bomb Group, 24th Bomb Squadron.

Captain Preston's regular aircraft was
#42-24825, aka "Snooky,"
named after Captain Preston's daughter.
The plane Capt. Preston was flying,
#42-65347, nicknamed "Fortunes Follies,"
was assigned to his crew for the fateful
mission.
The plane had flown the previous mission
and reported engine problems. There was not
sufficient time for adequate maintenance
and the same engine failed on takeoff.
