William was a shoemaker, according to the "Uhland" passenger list and the 1860 census. During the Civil War, William was a private in Co. C, 71st Rgt. of the Enrolled Missouri Militia (Captain Ehlers, commander). In 1869 he was one of several farmers who organized the Concordia [Missouri] Farmer's Mutual Insurance Co. (originally The Aid Association).
