Wilhelm was born in the village of Bettrum, Hannover, Germany to Heinrich Schlue and Elisabeth Jahns in September 1834.

William, his parents Heinrich and Elisabeth, and William's fiancee Wilhelmina "Dina/Dena" Ohlendorf, came to the U.S. aboard the "Uhland", arriving in New Orleans in June 1858.

William and Dina married in Lexington, Lafayette Co., Missouri, in December 1858. Their first child, Wilhelm Heinrich Bernhardt "William" Schlue was born in Breese, Clinton Co., Illinois. They had eight more children, all of whom were born in Missouri.

William was a shoemaker, according to the "Uhland" passenger list and the 1860 census. During the Civil War, William was a private in Co. C, 71st Rgt. of the Enrolled Missouri Militia (Captain Ehlers, commander). In 1869 he was one of several farmers who organized the Concordia [Missouri] Farmer's Mutual Insurance Co. (originally The Aid Association).
