Carl Heinrich August "Henry" Schlue was born 1830 in the village of Bettrum, Hannover, Germany, to Heinrich Schlue and Elisabeth Jahns.

Heinrich married Ellen Andrews in the Parish Church of Liverpool, Lancaster County, England, on 10 May 1854. A week later, Henry boarded the "Lightning" for Australia. Ellen and 3-month-old son Charles (b February 1855) followed him a year later aboard the "Donald McKay". Henry and Ellen had at least 14 children, all of whom were born in Australia except Charles.

The children of Henry and Ellen I am reasonably sure of are Charles (1855-1931), Henry Jr. (1856-1931), Ellen (1858-1882), William (1860-1869), Frederick (1862-1935), George (1863-1953), Alice (1865-1868), John (1866-1961), Alfred (1868-1952), Emma (1871-1875), Walter (1874-1910), Clara (1875-1969), and Arthur (1877-1885).

Henry established the Southern Cross Vineyards (H. Schlue & Sons) in Rutherglen, Victoria, with some 30 acres of vines. He became a naturalized citizen of Australia on 25 February 1897.
