Gertrude Knieper was born in Illerich, Germany. She met Henry Heidenfelder, an American, when he was stationed in France in 1918-1919. After he returned to the US, Gertrude and Henry continued their relationship by mail, and in 1921, Henry returned to Germany to marry Gertrude. They were married April 21, 1921 in Coblenz-Lutzel, Germany. In 1922, Gertrude immigrated to the US with her husband, where they lived in Belleville, IL, until their death.
