The son of Jesse & Elizabeth (Zorbach or Yorbaugh) Gentzler, in 1860 he was a laborer living in West Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had auburn hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted in York County as a substitute for Rudolf Ketterman October 24, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November 8 as a private with Co. C, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. He next enlisted in the regular army April 25, 1864, and assigned to Co. D, 33rd U.S. Infantry, a private. He later served with the 15th U.S. Infantry following reorganization and honorably discharged at term's end April 27, 1867, a sergeant.

He married Margaret Ketterman September 20, 1868, and fathered Perdita (b. 06/02/66, d. 04/21/71), William Henry (b. 08/18/70), John Ammon (b. 12/29/71), Alice (b. @1874), Annie K. (b. @1876), Hyman Adam (b. 07/28/77), Maggie Lucretia (b. 06/07/80 - married Lester L. Diehl), Jesse Cletus (b. 02/18/82), George Cleveland (b. 10/17/84), Bayard E. (b. 09/11/86), and - questionable - Chauncy J. (b. @1886[?]). In 1880, he lived with his family in Jackson Township, York County, and in 1890, in North Codorus Township, York County. Cause of death is listed as "arteriosclerosis" with "herpes zoster" a contributing factor.
