His obituary is:

Leister Guy Matthews of Enola died Thursday (Oct. 27, 2005) at Conway Regional Medical Center at the age of 78.

He was born in Enola on July 24, 1927, to the late William T. and Bertha Griffin Matthews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Matthews and Willie Dean Matthews; and two brothers, Tommy and Eldon Matthews.

He retired from the Army in 1970 after 25 years of service having served in Vietnam and Korea and many other theaters of operations.

He also retired from the Conway Public School System after 20 years of employment as the auto mechanic teacher in the Conway High School Career Center. He was a member of the Enola Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Vondeal Matthews; by four children, Nathan Thomas Matthews, Wendy Ellen Matthews, Mark Allen Matthews and wife, Debbie, and James Leister Matthews, all of Enola; three grandchildren, Kristin Lynn Bearb, Caleb Bayless and Sara Vondeal Matthews; one great-grandchild, Lyndsey Morgan Wood; by two sisters, Joy Matthews Tucker of St. Louis, Mo., and Shirley Smith of Conway; four brothers, Frank Matthews of Enola, Eldridge and Jack Matthews of Conway and Gordon Matthews of Greenbrier.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at the Enola Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Vic Connell, with burial in Marcus Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Conway (501.327.7727).

Military honors will be provided by the Unites States Army Honors Team.
