He was born September 9, 1923, in Happy Valley (Enola), AR, to the late William Thomas and Bertha E. (Griffin) Matthews.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Leister Matthews and Eldon Matthews and two sisters, Pauline Matthews and Williedean Matthews.
E.A. was a farmer, a mechanic, a dozer operator, and worked in food service for the Conway Public Schools. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Conway, a member of the Vilonia Saddle and Wagon Club, and was one of the founding members of the Faulkner County Farmers Market. He was a Navy veteran and served on the USS Colorado during WWII.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Alice (Moseley) Matthews; two sons, Steven "Dog" Matthews and Robert L. Matthews and wife Billina; one daughter, Marilyn Matthews, all of Conway; four grandchildren, Brian Ward and wife Shelly of Conway, Stephanie White and husband Michael of Grapevine, TX, Greg Matthews and Justin Matthews of Conway; three great-grandchildren, Gracie Ward, Faith Ward, and Avery White; three brothers, Frank Matthews and wife Pauline of Enola, Gordon Matthews of Conway, and Jack Matthews and wife Pat of Maumelle; and by two sisters, Joy Tucker of St. Louis, MO, and Shirley Smith and husband Harold D. of Conway.
Funeral services were at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway. Interment was at Oak Grove Cemetery.
