Mrs. Melcena Leora Beard, 97 years of age, departed this life on Tuesday, December 11, 1973, at the Christian Church Home in Louisville, Ky. Mrs. Beard was a native of Adair County, born on February 26, 1876. Mrs. Beard was united in marriage to George W. Beard, who preceded her in death in 1940. She was the daughter of the late F. H. Chelf and Anna Ametia Chelf. Mrs. Beard was a Christian, having professed faith in Christ early in life and was a member of the Roley Christian Church, and was the last surviving charter member of that church. Mrs. Beard is preceded in death by two sons and one daughter. She is survived by 4 sons: Charles R. Beard of Campbellsville, Pat Beard of Campbellsville, Harvey Beard of Dekalb, Ill., Morris Beard of Plano, Texas; 3 daughters: Mrs. Lela Goode of Wallach, Nebraska, Mrs. Hazel Murray of Campbellsville, and Mrs. Gladys McKinley of Campbellsville; 20 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. The funeral services were conducted at the Roley Christian Church on Friday, December 14, 1973, at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Don Walters was in charge of the services. Burial was in the Roley Cemetery. The pallbearers were Tommy Harding, Tommy Noe, Bobby Gabbert, George Walford, Mike Malone, and Hollis McKinley. The Lyon Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
