James and Louisa moved to Clay County in 1888, settling on 320 acres of land in the Shannon Community. Mr. Coody was a stockfarmer, breeder of Red Durham cattle, Percheron Draught Horses, and Poland China hogs. Mr. Coody worked as a carpenter, making parts for wagons out of wood, and farm tools. He also made coffins for the people in the community for many years. Each Satuday he ground corn meal for the people of the community.
