Lilian was the eighth child of nine born to William Thomas and Eleanor Maria Ardley (Turner) Blenkarn. When she was but six months old, her mother became very ill, and she was given into the care of her 12-year-old sister, Edith, who always said she raised her on bread and milk. She was four years old when she left England for America. One of her earliest recollections was of the voyage to America. All the older members of the family suffered from sea sickness and were unable to care for the younger ones. Lilian age 4, Osborn age 6, and Connie age 8 ran about the ship as they pleased and had a most wonderful time. The family settled in Illinois for a time where their father had a church and also farmed some. Later they moved to Kansas. Her father was the pastor of Wabaunsee Congregational Church in 1878. Here the older children began to work, the boys mostly on farms, the girls in homes, as that was about the only work to be had at that time. The younger children attended school in Wabaunsee. Lilian told of playing with Elford Burt, younger brother of George, whom she later married. She thought Elford was such a nice little boy and used to laughingly tell her children that had he lived, she probably would have married him instead of their father, who was two years older and paid no attention to her at that time. She married George Sharp Burt Jr. on October 22, 1868, in Wabaunsee, Kansas. They had five children, Elsie, Louise Lilian, Charles William, George Donald, and Ardley Phillip.
