Patrick was the first of the 6 children of Thomas Maher who came to America to make his home in 1860. On his arrival, he came to his uncle James Maher's home near Brimfield where he stayed for awhile. In 1865, he went to work near Kickapoo where he often told of having to kick the shocks of grain in harvesting time to scare the rattlesnakes out of them. Here he met his wife Mary Doran and they were married in 1871. They lived in a log cabin down the road from the Doran farm. This place was located about 1 ½ miles north of the Old Stone Church. Here their oldest son Thomas was born in 1872. They lived here until the spring of 1875 when they moved to a farm north and east of Brimfield on the Tommy Day's corner. Here son Martin was born on July 3, 1875. That summer they bought a farm west of Brimfield where their son William made his home in later years. They moved onto this farm in 1876 and this is where the other eight children, James, Agnes, Emma, William, Alice, Charles, Kathryn and Susanna were born. In 1889 they bought another farm that joined theirs on the south. This farm had a much larger house so they moved into it. (This was their sons Charles' home in later years.) They remained on this farm for eleven years. In 1894 they bought the Jake Riener farm south and east of them where their son Thomas and his wife Anna Carrigan went to live. In June of 1910 Patrick and his wife Mary left for a visit to his former home in Ballybrophy, Ireland. Before leaving for this trip, they had a family picture taken in Peoria. On their return from Ireland, they bought a home in Brimfield where they moved leaving son Charles and his wife Verna Hammer on the home place. Patrick and Mary lived in the town of Brimfield until February, 1915, when they moved to 312 S Orange Street in Peoria. That following October Mary Doran Maher passed away and was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Kickapoo, IL. Here Patrick lived until his death in September, !925. He was also buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Kickapoo, IL.
