James Maher was the youngest child of Thomas Maher and Julia Bergin Maher. James came to America in 1872. He first made his home with his older brother Patrick, who was then living in Brimfield/Kickapoo, Illinois area. James then relocated to the Buffalo area and in 1876 he married Julia Brennan. To this union 8 children were born: Thomas Edward Maher (12/13/1877-7/6/1937), James Michael Maher (12/14/1878-2/25/1956) spouse Stella Tillis Maher (12/9/1880-2/14/1977), Mary Maher (5/26/1880-5/26/1880), Anastatia Elizabeth Maher Zimmerman (9/6/1881-9/6/1956) spouse Joseph Zimmerman (1880-1953), Edward C. Maher (11/6/1882-5/13/1937), William Francis Maher (11/22/1883-8/8/1940) spouse Gertrude Bergtold Maher (5/29/1892-3/19/1983), Walter Robert Maher (5/10/1886-7/8/1936) and Joseph Maher (9/25/1888-9/25/1888).James frequently traveled to the Brimfield/Kickapoo, Illinois area to visit his 5 brothers and sisters who lived in that area.
