James Ballantyne was born October 26, 1826 in Roxburgshire, Scotland to John and Janet Turnbull Ballantyne.

After Joseph Smith was murdered the church split and some went with Brigham Young to Utah and some to Texas with Lyman Wight. James went to Texas arriving in 1845.

He married Abigail E. Andrews September 13, 1855 at Mountain Valley, Bexar County, Texas. In 1858 they went to Indian Territory in the Cherokee Nation where he was engaged in the manufacture of salt for about two years after which he moved to Shelby County, Iowa and later to Monona County, Iowa.
