Helen (Ellen) Ballantyne was born to John and Janet Turnbull Ballantyne on May 10, 1809 in Selkirkshire, Scotland.

The Ballantyne family had joined the Latter Day Saints in Scotland and came to the U.S. on the ship Tyrian landing at New Orleans in 1841. They went up the Mississippi River to Nauvoo, Illinois where the Mormans had settled and built a temple.

Helen married William Bell November 14, 1843 at Nauvoo, Illinois.

After Joseph Smith was murdered the Mormons split and went their separate ways. Some followed Brigham Young to Salt Lake and some to Texas with Lyman Wight.

William and Helen went with the Lyman Wight group to Texas.

William passed away in 1850 and Helen died April 15, 1891 in Bandera, Texas.
