Janet (Jessie) (Jepsie) Ballantyne was born to John and Janett Turnbull Ballantyne on September 12, 1813 in Selkirkshire, Scotland.

She married Alexander Hay April 17, 1835 in Selkirkshire, Scotland. They came to the U. S. with a group of Latter Day Saints landing at New Orleans in 1841. They went up the Mississippi River and settled at Nauvoo, Illinois where the Mormons had settled and built a temple. After Joseph Smith was murdered the colony split and went their separate ways. Some followed Brigham Young to Salt Lake, Utah and others followed Lyman Wight to Texas. Alexander and Jessie followed Lyman Wight.

Alexander died July 28, 1846 and is buried either at Nauvoo, MO or St. Louis, MO. There is a memorial stone for him at Bandera, Texas with his wife, Jessie.

Jessie passed away November 14, 1887 and is buried in the Bandera cemetery.
