A BIOGRAPHY OF MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE "MARK" RICHARDSON, by Laurence Overmire (great great nephew), genealogist and family historian, Aug. 2008:
Marquis de Lafayette Richardson, or "Mark" as he was known, was born in Maine, on June 20, 1835, the seventh of eight children of Bradbury and Jane (Rideout) Richardson. He was working on his father's farm in Hartford, Oxford County, Maine in 1850.
On September 29, 1862, at the age of 26, Mark enlisted in the Civil War in Company C of the 23rd Maine Infantry. The regiment served as part of the defense of Washington, D.C.
On July 23, 1864, Mark married Matilda Dorcas Lapham, the daughter of James and Sarah (Moody) Lapham. They had 6 children.
On Apr. 27,1865, family friend Axel Reed noted in his diary that he had dinner with Mark and his wife. Axel was a Civil War veteran who would be awarded the Medal of Honor for his gallant conduct at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge.
In 1870, Mark was living in his father's house and working as a painter.
Mark died in 1900, probably in Maine, at the age of 64, but his burial location is unknown.
