OBITUARY

Eben E. H. Richardson passed away in this city last Saturday afternoon between 5 and 6 o’clock, at the age of over 77 years. His demise was the result of a general failing physically due to advanced age, and the end was hastened by two light strokes of paralysis he recently suffered. The late Eben E. H. Richardson was a native of Maine, and was born at New Gloucester on May 25th 1830. He was the sixth son of a family consisting of eight boys and one girl, and is survived by two brothers, namely, Rev. Orin Richardson of Denver, Col., and G. D. Richardson, of Wellsley, Mass. At the age of 22, in company with Sampson Reed, a brother of Capt. A. H. Reed of this city, he went to Australia, where he remained about twenty-five years. He followed mining as a vocation from his youth until incapacitated by age. He returned from Australia after attaining what may be called a fortune, and reentered mining in the Black Hills country and Montana. As is characteristic of those engaged in mining, he experienced periods of adversity as well as prosperity. During his life time he traveled extensively through many countries in the world. He was an extensive reader and was well informed on current topics. He was an interesting conversationalist and a man of jovial disposition and of witty frame of mind. The late Eben Richarsdon was a benevolent man, and in his more prosperous days was always ready to share with the needy, or any worthy cause. He never married. About five years ago he came to this city to make, his home with his late brother, Joseph Richardson, at which domicile he has since resided. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the house. Dr. Dewart, pastor of the local M. E. church, officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in Mount Auburn cemetery.
