A BIOGRAPHY OF JOSEPH RICHARDSON, by Larry Overmire (great great grandson), Aug. 2008:

Joseph Richardson was born in Pownal or New Gloucester, Maine, on June 4, 1822, the second of eight children of Bradbury and Jane (Rideout) Richardson. He learned the brick-making trade and found employment in Woburn, Massachusetts, Chicago, Illinois, and Hammondsville, Ohio. Later, he engaged in the mercantile business in Warren, Rhode Island, and Boston, Massachusetts.

On June 3, 1852, at the age of 30, he married 26-year-old Lydia Phelps Reed, the daughter of Sampson and Huldah (Bisbee) Reed, in Hartford, Oxford County, Maine.

Soon after his marriage, Joseph engaged with the Rochester Brick & Tile Co. of Brighton, Monroe County, New York, superintending the company's large factory there. He also engaged with a Mr. Ewing in refining crude oil and manufacturing "Vacuum Oil."

At Brighton, seven children were born to Joseph and Lydia: Ella Jane, Walter Jay, Lillie Blanche, Lydia Blanche, Axel Joseph, Lillian Mae, and Emma Daisy. The Richardsons lived there for 20 years at what was called "Brighton Twelve Corners," located near the brick and tile yards.

In 1872, Joseph left the Brick & Tile Company and the Vacuum Oil Company and moved with his family from Rochester to Glencoe, Minnesota, where he engaged in the general merchandise business with his brother-in-law Civil War veteran Axel Hayford Reed (who won the Medal of Honor at the Battle of Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge) under the firm name of A. H. Reed & Co. This business continued until 1884, when it underwent a change and Joseph assumed the firm's business at Bird Island, Renville County, Minnesota, conducting a general merchandise and grain business under the name "J. Richardson & Co."

Joseph built a spacious home on an 80 acre farm adjoining Glencoe. Prominent in social circles and a life-long member of the Methodist Epicopal Church, he was beloved in the community and affectionately known as "Uncle Joe."

Joseph died in Glencoe the day after his 84th birthday, June 6, 1906. His obituary reported:

"Death was caused by a complication of diseases with which the deceased had been afflicted for some months immediately preceding his demise, all of which afflictions had been borne with the greatest Christian fortitude. Total blindness during the last few months of his life, was, to the late deceased, who was always interested in current events, perhaps the greatest calamity that could have befallen him and caused him the greatest sorrow."

Joseph was laid to rest in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Glencoe.
