John Samuel Hadley was the son of Joshua Hadley (1743-1815)and Ruth Lindley (1745-1798). Joshua was born in New Castle, Delaware and Ruth was born in London Grove, Pennsylvania. Joshua was married 3 times, Ruth Lindley, Lydia Hiatt (Beals) and Jane Hinshaw. Both Joshua and Ruth are buried in Cane Creek MM Snow Camp, North Carolina.

John was married to Lydia Harvey on October 15, 1794. They had twelve children, William (1795-1845), Simon (1796-1879), Elizabeth (1798-1850), Joshua (1799-1808), Jacob C. (1801-1879), Isaac (1802-1839), Eli (1804-1854), John (1806-1882), Thomas (1808-1828), Jonathan D. (1810-1872), Ruth (1812-1852 and Jane (1815-1887).

On 5 Sep 1807, John and his family were at Center MM, Clinton Co. OH by Cane Creek MM, NC. They settled near the present town of Wilmington.
In the Clinton Co., Ohio History there was a grist-mill built in 1805 by Mordecai Mendenhall and after passing to several owners over the years it was deeded to John Hadley in May, 1837 who owned it until 1841 when he sold it.

In 1808, Eli Harvey and John Hadley, brothers-in-law, built a grist-mill on Todd's Fork about one mile below Springfield Meeting House. It was afterward owned by John Hadley, and became widely known as Hadley's Mill. His sons, Isaac and John, afterward owned it for a time.
