After finishing the ninth grade in the district schools he attended college in Mt Pleasant, Iowa, and afterwords, taught in the Webster and Lincoln school districts in Rock Creek Township. In 1901 he attended Business College in Burlington, Iowa, living in the home of Elbert A. Smith. From there he went to Lamoni, Iowa to attend the General Conference, beginning April 6 1906. While at this conference he received his first missionary appointment and the following May he began his active work in the church. His work in the church continued in various capacities, first as an active missionary for two years, then the first of September 1906, he began teaching as principal of the Third Ward School in Nauvoo, continuing in that capacity for two years during which time he had charge of the work of the Latter Day Saint Church there as well as several capacities throughout the district.

Beginning with his arrival in Independence, Missouri where he had moved in 1911, he worked as a Bishop in Independence, Bishop of Independence Stake, in charge of the Sanitarium, Children's Home, Home for the Aged, and as a member of the Presiding Bishopric of the Church for six years. During part of this time he was also President of the Jackson County Bank and an active member of various boards of the church in looking after its property affairs.

In 1927 he was made a member of the Board of Directors of Midland Broadcasting Company in Kansas City. Starting in 1932, he was also engaged in the insurance and real estate business.
