Alexander Augustus was born about 1/2 mile south of Powellton, IL., in a house that stood across from the Thornber/Powellton Cemetery. During his youth, he lived with his parents on the farm, and attended the Powellton, Douglas, and Webster district schools. He left the farm in 1898 to start school in Howe's Academy at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. The school presented him with the diploma of graduation in 1900. While he was there he taught General History, Arithmetic, and Latin. Coming back to Illinois that year he worked on the the farm for his older brothers, helping with the crops. During the next five years he taught school in the Webster, Adrian, and Lincoln districts, worked on the farm, sold books, and finished his law course at Missouri State University, graduating in jurisprudence in 1905. That summer he was a practicing attorney until March 1920. From that time until 1937 he lived in Omaha, Nebraska. Following that time, he also spent time in Independence, Missouri and was in the real estate business with his brother Mark.
