Balthasar Roell, Civil War Veteran, Succumbs in Mt. Pisgar Community
Was Native of Germany
Balthasar Roell, an aged and influential resident, died at his home four miles east of this city on the Cynthian pike, in the Mt. Pisgan community at eleven-twenty o'clock Friday night. Death was caused from pneumonia, from which he had suffered for only a few days. He was 86 years; two months and twenty0nine days of age.
Mr. Roell was born in Schiimborn Bavaria, Germany, December 13, 1839, and came to this country when eighteen years of age [abt. 1857]. He had lived in Shelby county since 1908, having moved here from Franklin county. On July 9, 1866, Mr. Roell was united in marriage with Elizabeth Studer and to this union ten children were born, six of whom are living. They are Frank J. Roell, of Indianapolis; Mrs. George Weintraut, of Waldron; Henry, at home; Adam, of Liberty township; Gregory, of Newport, Ky, and Carl, of Addison township. Mrs. Roell passed away April 3, 1923. The deceased is also survived by thirtyeight grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Roell was a veteran of the civil war, having served in Co. D, Eighty-third regiment of volunteers and was engaged in several important battles, including the siege of Vicksburg, and being with General Sherman in his march to the sea. He was discharged August 8, 1863. He was a member of the St. Vincent Catholic church, where funeral services will be conducted Monday morning at nine0thirty, the Rev. Father Wolf, assisted by Rev. Father Monsignor Roell of Richmond, an the Rev. Father John Rager of this city officiating. Interment will be made in St. Vincent cemetery, Charles M. Ewing in charge.
