John Coy Barnes was born December 5, 1916, in Oxford, Arkansas (Izard County). On February 6, 1937, in Purcell, Oklahoma (McClain County), Coy married Opal Ilene Newville, who was born September 19, 1916.

He was born to Thomas F and Ida Barnes in Oxford, Ar. The family moved to Corbett Community in 1931, where they operated a general store.

Coy married Opal Illege Newville Feb. 6, 1937 in Purcell. They were co-owners of Big Elm General Store at Springhill until 1946 when Coy went to work for Cleveland County. He was a heavy equipment operator and retired in 1977, after 31 years. In 1988, they sold their home place and moved to Purcell. Coy was a member of the Springhill Freewill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ollie Ellis. He is survived by his wife, sons, daughters, a sister, 12 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.


Coy died December 19, 1995, in Norman, Oklahoma (Cleveland County) and was buried in the Lexington Cemetery. Opal died March 11, 2010, and was buried beside her husband.
