Robert Cummings Morphis was born in Wentworth, Rockingham County in 1892. His father died when he was a small boy and according to what I was told he left home early with a circus and worked as a roustabout and then as a barker for the sideshows. He later worked with the railroad until there was a big layoff and he was stranded in Columbia SC for a while. There he got a job in the Duck Fabric (Canvas) mill and worked until he saved enough funds to return to Greensboro, NC. While living there he met and married Nannie Florence Wallace, June 15 1915 and they lived in Bessemer and attended the Buffalo Presbyterian Church. Bob worked for Cone mills and they had three children while in Greensboro. One child died and is buried in an unmarked grave at the Wentworth (NC)Presbyterian Church.
Nannie inherited some land from her Aunt Nannie Seawell Williams around 1918 and they moved to Moore County and built a log home, barn & smokehouse on the land. There Bob worked for the local fabric mill in Robbins, NC. Their 4th child was born while they lived in Robbins. During WWII Bob worked in Norfolk, VA and Nannie stayed in Moore County. During the 50's Bob and Nan lived and worked in Asheboro, first in an apartment at Mrs (Dr) Moore's on Sunset Ave and later in a garage apartment on South Cox Street. Sometime in the late 50's they moved back to the "farm" in Robbins where they remained (more or less) until Nannie's death. Bob spent some time with his son, Donald, in Robbins and later with his daughter, Beatrice, in Greensboro. He was living in Greensboro at the time of his death.
