Son of Samuel Arthur Russell and Rebecca Letman.

He married Mary Willis on Oct. 1, 1833 in McDonough County, Illinois. They had no children of their own, but they adopted Mattie Underhill.

John Russell was a Private in Butler's Co. ILL Mounted Rangers during the Blackhawk War.

John Russell was a farmer for most of his life and ran a boarding house with his wife, Mary, in later years.

John L. Russell, bom December 8. 1808, near Campbellville. Green County, Kentucky, came to McDonough County May 5. 1832. Settled on and improved the "Jack Gash" farm, one mile west of Macomb
